Asamoah Gyan accuses Osimhen of faking his injury with Nigeria
Officially sidelined with an ankle injury during Nigeria's win over Rwanda (1-0), Victor Osimhen missed the high-stakes clash against South Africa (1-1). But for Asamoah Gyan, the former Black Stars captain, the story isn’t so straightforward.
The top scorer in Ghanaian football history didn’t mince his words when voicing his doubts about the legitimacy of the injury. According to him, this could be a ploy to keep the striker fresh for his club commitments:
I know these tricks. They probably told Osimhen: the Champions League is coming up, we’ve made a massive investment in you. Go to Nigeria, play a bit, then fake an injury and come back quickly to Turkey.
A serious accusation that reignites the long-standing debate over the tug-of-war between African national teams and European clubs. Is this simply bad luck, or a calculated move to protect the Super Eagles’ star striker?
The stats speak volumes about Osimhen’s impact: in the three qualifiers he played, Nigeria never lost (2 wins, 1 draw). In his absence, the record is far less impressive: four draws and one defeat in five matches.
