Aston Villa are close to signing Matteo Ruggeri and Zion Suzuki, with Emi Martinez’s future uncertain after Juventus abandoned a move, according to ExpressAndStar.com. Talks collapsed over the fee, and the Italian club have turned to Tottenham’s Gueglielmo Vicario.
Villa are pushing to complete a £30m deal for Suzuki on a five-year contract, and view the Japan international as their long-term No.1. With two weeks of the window left, Martinez is now seeking another route out.
Martinez has held the role without challenge since joining in 2020. His future has been a live issue in each of the past two summers. Last year he missed out on a desired switch to Manchester United, who chose Senne Lammens instead.
He was quickly reintegrated and played a major part as Villa ended a 30-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Juventus emerged as suitors early this summer but the cost proved a problem. A fresh approach last week prompted Villa’s move for Suzuki after his proposed transfer to Paris Saint-Germain fell through.
Left-back Ruggeri is joining in a deal worth around £17m. West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains an option at right-back. Villa kick off their Premier League season away at Brighton on Sunday.
