Aston Villa have been handed a possible triple injury lift before hosting Sunderland on Sunday, with Emi Martinez, Tyrone Mings and Jadon Sancho back in first team training.

According to Sunderland Echo, Emery’s side are fourth, with Sunderland 10th and two points off Chelsea in sixth.

Villa face Bologna in a Europa League quarter-final second leg on Thursday, holding a 3-1 aggregate lead at Villa Park, and could have reinforcements for both matches.

Wednesday’s session featured Martinez, Mings and Sancho, all absent from the 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Martinez withdrew on Sunday with a calf complaint and is expected to be monitored ahead of a possible return against Bologna. Mings also sat out at the City Ground but could be back in midweek. Sancho has been sidelined by a shoulder issue suffered in a friendly against Elche CF.

Emery said Martinez is training with the squad, expects him to be available on Thursday, and that a final decision will be taken tomorrow. On Sancho, he said the winger is returning, praised his quality and adaptation, and regretted the injury that interrupted his fine pre-international-break form.
