Aston Villa are reportedly in “talks” to re-sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus in the January transfer window after losing another midfielder to injury.

Youri Tielemans will spend an “extended spell” on the sidelines with an ankle injury, according to The Athletic.

The Belgium international, who sustained the injury against Newcastle United on Sunday, joins John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara on the treatment table.

Following an initial scan, Tielemans is expected to return after McGinn, who will be out for at least six weeks, while Kamara has been ruled out for the rest of season.

With Villa just four points off Premier League leaders Arsenal, it appears the club will dip into the transfer market to maintain their surprise title challenge.

The Midlands outfit had looked at the possibility of signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek from AC Milan, but they have turned their attention to former fan favourite Luiz.

Sky Sports News claim the club are in “talks” to re-sign the 27-year-old just 18 months after he joined Juventus for £43 million (€50m).

Luiz is available to switch loan clubs from Nottingham Forest after barely playing for the Tricky Trees this season. He has made just five starts in the Premier League this term.

Villa are also looking to finalise the signing of former striker Tammy Abraham from Besiktas this week after agreeing an £18m deal.
