The timing made the incident awkward for Unai Emery. Villa face Coventry City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before travelling to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, then a three-week international break. A lengthy absence would threaten Torres’ involvement, while Emery is expected to give a clearer assessment after the match. He can play short diagonals, carry the ball forward and switch play without forcing midfielders to drop deep.

Mings offers the obvious solution. He is left-footed, experienced and far stronger in the air, so Emery can preserve the basic shape without changing the basic role overnight. The trade-off comes in possession. Mings does not offer the same progressive carrying or crisp line-breaking distribution that Torres gives Villa when opponents press high.

That could matter against teams who trap Villa near the first line of possession. Torres can step into space, attract pressure and release the next pass early. Mings can defend that situation, but he changes its rhythm.

Aston Villa still have Lindelöf, but he already starts

Victor Lindelöf provides another technical option, although he already started alongside Torres. His composure and passing range suit Emery’s distribution model, yet using him as Torres’ replacement would leave a vacancy elsewhere.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis gives Emery another defensive option, but pairing him with a right-footed centre-back would likely alter the preferred asymmetrical build-up. That makes Mings the cleanest immediate replacement, even if Villa lose some progression from the back.

Torres had two assists in Villa’s 3-2 Champions League win at Club Brugge, showing how directly his passing can influence attacks. With Coventry and Tottenham next, Emery may have to accept a more conservative build-up unless the injury proves minor.
