Fabrizio Romano reports that Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign Wolverhampton midfielder João Gomes. Only medical tests remain before the contract is signed.
The deal is worth 40 million euros fixed, about 274 million reais, with a further 5 million euros, around 34 million reais, in performance bonuses. The package could therefore reach 45 million euros, close to 308 million reais.
João Gomes has left Wolves’ pre-season camp in Portugal to undergo his medical and finalise details with Villa.
Flamengo, the player’s formative club, are due four percent of the total through FIFA’s solidarity mechanism. The Rio side also retain 10 percent of his economic rights and, based on the fixed fee, expect to collect about 33.9 million reais.
A Flamengo academy graduate, João Gomes became a mainstay in the senior team and was pivotal in the 2022 Libertadores and Copa do Brasil triumphs. Since moving to English football in 2023, he has earned Brazil call-ups.
Manchester United and Liverpool have tracked the midfielder. Before talks with Unai Emery’s side, Atlético Madrid had advanced negotiations over a 45 million euro deal, but that collapsed after agent Jorge Mendes changed course. Atlético, who also had a parallel arrangement with the agent regarding Bernardo Silva, reacted angrily when the Portuguese midfielder joined Real Madrid and cancelled the move as João Gomes prepared to relocate to Spain.
