Joao Gomes is set to leave Wolves for Aston Villa after departing the club’s Portugal training camp for a medical in the UK.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the proposed £38 million switch would be the biggest transfer between the West Midlands rivals. It would end a three-and-a-half-year Molineux stint that brought 116 Premier League games and 130 appearances in all competitions.
Wolves agreed a deal with Flamengo, who sought to renege after Lyon’s slightly higher bid, but after a ‘Free Joao Gomes’ campaign he completed an €18.7 million move in January 2023.
He scored the winner on debut from the bench in a 2-1 comeback at Southampton in February 2023. His FA Cup bow was far less memorable. He was sent off after nine minutes at Brentford in January 2024 for a challenge on Christian Norgaard, though Wolves still earned a replay.
Just over a month later he scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Tottenham.
He received a first Brazil call-up in early 2024 and debuted at Wembley in a 1-0 win over England, playing the full 90 minutes.
Last season the 25-year-old featured in all but three of Wolves’ 38 league matches as their eight-year top-flight stay ended, finishing with one goal and one assist. He was Players’ Player of the Season, also taking Men’s Community Player of the Season and the club’s PFA Community Champion award.
He signed a five-year contract in April 2025 to 2030, but after relegation a near-deal with Atletico Madrid fell through and the switch is now progressing.
