In a recent report, Bild mentioned that Aston Villa are set to miss out on Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter. It has been mentioned that the Villans were in the running to land the German centre-back who has now decided to join SC Freiburg this summer.

Ginter’s Impressive Run Of Form In German Football

Ginter is enjoying another solid campaign in Germany after producing a series of dominant displays at the centre of Monchengladbach’s defence. The 28-year-old has made 30 appearances for the German outfit this season, scoring one goal across all fronts.

The German defensive ace has been a rock at the back for Monchengladbach as he is averaging 1.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He has even been excellent when distributing possession from the back based on his pass completion rate of 83.6% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Missing Out On Ginter: Big Blow For Aston Villa?

Ginter is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions on the defensive third of the field. He can sense the danger quickly and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed.

Standing at 1.91m, Ginter can use his strength to outmuscle the opposition attackers and win a few crucial headers inside his half. He is primarily a centre-back but can also play as a defensive midfielder or fill in at right-back if needed. At 28, the Monchengladbach ace is currently playing at his prime and would have added more bite and steel to Aston Villa’s defence.

There is no doubt that a centre-half of Ginter’s skillset would have been a terrific acquisition for the Villans this summer. Hence, missing out on him will be a massive blow for the West Midlands club ahead of the summer transfer window.

The fact that Ginter will be available as a free agent at the end of this campaign, makes him an attractive option for most top-flight clubs in Europe. Now that Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has missed out on Ginter, he should think about turning his attention to some of his other defensive targets in this off-season.
