Aston Villa have reached an agreement in principle with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye, according to Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic. The deal is valued at €55 million, with Villa currently finalising the paperwork ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Tanswell reports the club have been keeping tabs on the 18-year-old winger for some time, and the move has accelerated sharply in the final days of the window. Ibrahim Mbaye to Aston Villa, if confirmed, would represent one of the most eye-catching pieces of business any English club has completed this summer.

The deal has an unusual backstory. Villa owner Nassef Sawiris and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi share a close personal relationship, and that connection reportedly saw Liverpool priced out of a move earlier this month.

Mbaye fits that profile precisely. At PSG last season, operating under Luis Enrique across 24 Ligue 1 matches totalling 1,007 minutes, he completed passes at an 86.62% rate and ranked in the 96th percentile among Ligue 1 right wingers. He produced 1.80 key passes per 90 minutes.

Crucially, he suffered just 77 possession losses across the entire league campaign, a figure that tells you far more about his football intelligence than a highlights reel ever could. Emery’s system demands that kind of discipline from his wide players, and Mbaye appears built for it.

At 18, Mbaye has already collected two Ligue 1 titles, contributed to PSG‘s Champions League campaign this season, and scored a stoppage-time winner against RC Lens. On the international stage, he switched allegiance from France to Senegal in late 2025, earned 15 senior caps, helped Senegal win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and scored against France at the 2026 World Cup, becoming the youngest African goalscorer in the tournament’s history. His contract at PSG runs until 2028.

That context matters for the fee. €55 million is steep. But Liverpool’s failed pursuit earlier this August demonstrated PSG’s valuation wasn’t shifting through normal channels. Villa used the Sawiris-Al-Khelaifi relationship to move where others couldn’t. For a player with these credentials, a sell-on value that’s almost certain to grow, and the tactical fit Emery desperately needed on the right flank, the number starts to look rather different.
