According to Diario AS, Ruggeri did not travel with Atlético for their pre-season trip while he decided his future, a strong indication that negotiations had entered an advanced stage. Villa moved quickly once the opportunity appeared, identifying the 24-year-old as a player capable of adding a different dimension to Unai Emery’s defence.

Ruggeri arrived in Madrid from Atalanta only last summer. Even so, Atlético reshaped the position during this window, opening the door for Villa to secure a player who still carries plenty of upside. This deal makes plenty of football sense before anyone even discusses the transfer fee. Reports suggest Villa will pay an initial €18m with another €6m linked to bonuses, while Lucas Digne’s £8.5 m switch to Paris Saint-Germain helps balance the books. That combination leaves Emery with a younger option and limits the overall financial impact.

Being 6ft 2in, he brings greater physical presence, stronger aerial ability and an aggressive style without sacrificing technical quality.
