Aston Villa have been dealt a double injury blow, with Joao Gomes and Brian Madjo ruled out for several weeks (The Athletic).
They debuted for Villa in the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Salzburg earlier this week.
Gomes picked up a calf injury and will be out for between two and four weeks. Madjo is expected to miss up to a month of action with an unspecified injury.
Madjo made history by scoring in the 2-1 defeat to PSG. He became the youngest player to score in the UEFA Super Cup.
The 17-year-old has been on the club’s books since joining from Metz in a £10 million move in January, but he only recently received clearance to play for them this summer.
Villa brought in Gomes to replace Youri Tielemans after his move to Manchester United this summer.
The injuries to both players will leave manager Unai Emery with a selection dilemma ahead of their season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on August 23.
Madjo impressed in pre-season, compensating for the absence of Ollie Watkins. Tammy Abraham is still working his way back to full fitness after an injury.
The injury to Gomes leaves Villa needing to sign another midfielder. It could accelerate their interest in Bayern Munich star Joao Palhinha.
