Aston Villa are unlikely to pursue Marcus Rashford in this window, despite renewed uncertainty over the forward’s future.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Rashford is due to report back to Manchester United for pre-season after Barcelona declined to take up an option for a permanent deal.

Unai Emery remains an admirer of the 28-year-old after Rashford spent the second half of 2024-25 on loan in the West Midlands. Villa can offer Champions League football next season, yet their room to spend is again limited by Uefa financial fair play.

Rashford’s wages, around £325,000 a week, sit well beyond Villa’s current pay structure.

While he enjoyed his spell at Villa, the player’s preference remains a move abroad should he leave United permanently this summer.

He registered 14 goals and 14 assists on loan at Barcelona this season, but the Catalan club did not trigger a £26 million option. It remains possible they could try to negotiate a lower price with United later in the summer.

Emery’s priority is to add depth in attack, with a striker and two wide players targeted. He would also like to recruit a right-back.
