Atalanta beat Roma 1-0 in Bergamo, yet both sides railed at VAR, with Giorgio Scalvini’s winner upheld and a Gianluca Scamacca effort later ruled out. “Looking at the footage, that is an absurd goal to give,” said Gian Piero Gasperini, he told DAZN.
Scalvini forced in from six yards after Mile Svilar spilled a corner. VAR checked for several minutes then allowed it, judging any block on the goalkeeper came from Devyne Rensch, not Scalvini. A possible handball was rejected as the ball went in off his chest.
Gasperini added, “You can’t change the rule every time. There are two reasons to disallow it, one is the arm on the goalkeeper, the second is the handball from the player who scores. It’s totally inexplicable. It’s absurd.”
Svilar maintained it was a foul, saying, “I both felt something on my arm and then behind my head. In my view, when the goalkeeper is touched in the six-yard box, it is always a foul.”
Scamacca later scored, but after a prolonged check the referee used an on-field review and disallowed it for active offside. Some argued the striker did not challenge Mario Hermoso, whose poor first touch put the ball back in his path. Refereeing analyst Luca Marelli said, “I would’ve still disallowed the goal, because Scamacca took advantage of being in an offside position and actively participated in the move.”
