Atalanta could only manage a point in Serie A prior to their Champions League round of 16 first leg against Bayern, being held to a 2-2 draw by Udinese at home on Saturday evening. The visitors took a two-goal lead with goals either side of half-time by Thomas Kristensen and Keinan Davis, but Gianluca Scamacca’s quickfire brace earned Raffaele Palladino’s side a point.

Fighting for Europe

The result leaves Atalanta in seventh place in Serie A but now four points behind Juventus in sixth. A run of four straight league wins was ended last weekend by a 2-1 loss at Sassuolo. Currently only the top six in Italy will qualify for European competition next season.

In the Champions League, the Bergamo club had to come through the play-offs to reach the last 16. They did it the hard way as well, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to Borussia Dortmund by winning 4-1 at home. The Italians had previously beaten the likes of Chelsea in the league phase at their New Balance Arena.
