Athletic paid tribute at San Mamés to Justo Izaguirre, the club’s member number one, who died on Tuesday aged 104, and to his wife, Mara Cruz Casado, 98, who died on Friday.

According to El Correo, Casado was among the first women to become full members after new statutes were approved in 1979 under president Beti Duñabeitia.

Four years ago, when Izaguirre turned 100, his family surprised him at Lezama with a visit to the first-team squad attended by president Jon Uriarte, captains Muniain, De Marcos and Williams, and head coach Ernesto Valverde.

The men’s and women’s first teams wore black armbands in their league fixtures against Elche and Espanyol.

15 minutes before the match, relatives in red and white shirts, accompanied by vice-president Javier Landeta, placed bouquets on the couple’s seats beside a photograph.

The same image, taken at Ibaigane with an Athletic flag between them, was shown on the big screens and drew a warm ovation from those inside the stadium.
