Athletic players wear their mothers’ surnames at Mendizorroza | OneFootball

Athletic paid tribute to mothers this afternoon at Mendizorroza, with the squad taking to the pitch wearing their mothers’ surnames on their shirts ahead of tomorrow’s Mother’s Day.

The Williams wore Arthuer, Sancet had Tirapu, and Simón took the field with Mendibil. The club said in a statement the initiative recognises mothers and the fundamental role they have played in the players’ lives.

It described the act as symbolic, intended to highlight the support, effort and constant accompaniment behind each professional journey, from the first steps to the elite.

Athletic also published a list of the surnames carried by the squad, including Espinosa, Moreno, Casamichana, López, Arruti, Remiro and Arthuer Jr.

Further names listed included Rodríguez, Blanco, Arroyo and Fevre, plus Martínez, Etxeberria, Izeta and Alboniga. Also Boiro, Etxebarria, Harrouch, Galdeano, Muñoz, Díaz, Lertxundi, Linares, Pérez and Mora.
