Athletic Club has sent a message of encouragement to Unai Simón, Nico Williams and Aymeric Laporte, and to Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente, before Sunday’s World Cup final. According to El Correo, the note was shared on the club’s social channels.

The post also recalled de la Fuente’s time with Athletic in the 1980s, when he won two league titles in 1982-1983 and 1983-1984, plus the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España.

The club said all four are united by Athletic, and paired the message with an image of the three current first-teamers and de la Fuente from his playing days. It stressed the significance of belonging to a unique club, and said the quartet carry its name and values to the World Cup final on X, formerly Twitter.

On the Spain versus Argentina result, the tone was reflective, noting that whatever the destination, there is always an origin, a family and a home.

The club summed this up with the line "Lezama-New York-Lezama", pointing to academy roots, the journey to New York to chase the World Cup, and the aim of making international football history.
