Real Madrid suffered a derby defeat as Dean Huijsen was sent off, with Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David getting on the scoresheet for Atlético Madrid.

After a cagey first half, the game burst into life after Dean Huijsen brought down Simeone in the box, giving away a penalty and being sent off in the process. The resulting spot-kick was tucked away by Alejandro Grimaldo.

Atlético doubled their lead soon after, Giovanni Simeone picked out Jonathan David, who tapped home from close range. Antonio Rüdiger got one back late on for Real Madrid from a set-piece, but Atlético held on for a derby day victory.

The result sees Atlético leapfrog their rivals into second place, with Barcelona finding themselves five points clear of the two Madrid teams at the top of LaLiga.

It was a feisty first ten minutes, with no real chances for either side in a game marred by fouls, and it took until the 14th minute before either team could create anything of note. That opportunity fell to the hosts as Kang-in Lee found Jonathan David at the back post, but the Canadian was unable to get clean contact on his header as Real Madrid were able to clear.

The lack of quality and sightings on goal continued throughout the opening period, as did the aggression between the two teams. That was shown after VAR sent the referee to the monitor to review a supposed stamp on Jude Bellingham by Cristian Romero, but the referee opted to only give the Argentine a yellow card for the challenge.

Arda Güler then had an effort from long range tipped over by Jan Oblak, but that was the only shot on target from either side after a very cagey first half.

The second half started with Atlético in the driving seat, and their positive start was rewarded with a penalty kick after Dean Huijsen pulled Simeone to the ground after failing to deal with a ball over the top. VAR brought the referee to the monitor again, but this time, he upgraded his decision and gave Huijsen a straight red card. The resulting spot-kick was dispatched by Alejandro Grimaldo, giving the hosts the lead after 52 minutes.

It didn’t take long for Diego Simeone’s side to double their lead against the ten men. Simeone whipped a lovely ball in from the right, picking out David in the box, and the striker made no mistake from close range to make it 2-0 before the hour mark.

Somehow, Atlético didn’t add a third after 65 minutes. Romero looked like he had headed home, but Thibaut Courtois came up with a brilliant save to keep it out, with the ball falling straight to substitute Julián Álvarez. The Argentine, looking to win back the Atlético faithful, fired a shot that beat Courtois, but Ibrahim Konaté headed it off the line to keep the deficit at two.

With 89 minutes on the clock, Antonio Rüdiger headed home after Bernardo Silva’s wide free-kick to bring Real Madrid back into the contest, despite the numerous missed opportunities that Atlético Madrid passed up on to wrap up the result.
