Former La Liga star Mason Greenwood could be back on the transfer radar of Atletico Madrid as early as the start of 2026.

The 23-year-old striker completed a summer transfer move away from Manchester United in June 2024 following his return from a loan spell at Getafe.

Roberto De Zerbi highlighted the forward as a key target ahead of last season as he rewarded that faith with a superb first year in France.

21 Ligue 1 goals saw Marseille finish second in the final French top-flight rankings as he shared the Golden Boot award with Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele.

Los Rojiblancos were linked with an offer for Greenwood, after scoring eight league goals in that stint at Getafe, but they opted against a formal offer.

Part of the reasoning from Diego Simeone’s end was to assess from afar over how he progressed early on in France with scouts dispatched regularly to assess his progress.

Atletico Madrid plan fresh Mason Greenwood offer

Two goals from seven games at the start of 2025/26 has kept Atletico Madrid interested and an offer could now be put together.

Alexander Sorloth, Giacomo Raspadori and Julian Alvarez have all arrived since Greenwood joined Marseille and reports from Fichajes.net claim De Zerbi will demand in the region of €75m.

That fee can not be met without a significant sale in Madrid, but Simeone is determined to retain Alvarez, with funds needing to be raised from elsewhere.

There is also the complicated of United holding a flexible 50% sell-on clause for Greenwood following his 2024 transfer to Marseille which could increase based on his performance, goals, and games played.

The Red Devils will want to make a profit, based on the €31m Marseille paid for him, but his current side are also looking for a bumper pay day if they have to sell.

Barcelona have previously expressed an interest in Greenwood, but that did not develop, with the current focus in Catalonia set on signing his former United teammate Marcus Rashford.
