Kang In Lee will sign for Atlético Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain this week, becoming a key piece for Diego Pablo Simeone after successful spells at Mallorca and in Paris.
Marca states Atlético plan to announce the deal this week, closing weeks of negotiations.
The South Korean playmaker adds versatility, able to operate wide or between the lines, and brings dribbling, a powerful shot from range and sharp combination play. His final ball is among his standout qualities.
Atlético have rated him highly, with Mateu Alemany leading the sporting set-up. Having played fewer minutes this season than two years ago, he was ready to move to feel important again.
Valencia’s handling of his exit was one of Spanish football’s most ruinous operations. The club effectively gave away a major Asian star, with potential for Europe’s elite, to make room for a middling striker, paying more than €8 million.
In their rush they failed to secure a sell-on clause, losing control of a homegrown asset and much of the potential financial upside.
Even so, Valencia will receive 3.5% of the fee via FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, which distributes money to clubs that registered the player between ages 12 and 23 based on time served. Mallorca, who signed him at 20, will take the remaining 1.5% to reach the 5% total.
