Atlético de Madrid beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Madrid derby on Sunday, Giuliano Simeone pivotal and Dean Huijsen’s dismissal left Real with 10 for almost all of the second half. The game came in the seventh round of La Liga.
L'Équipe notes the Argentine forward silenced debate over his selection with a big display. He won the penalty for the opener, then set up David to make it 2-0, while grafting tirelessly.
First-half flashpoints piled up. Huijsen was often on the edge and lost a fierce duel with Kang-in Lee on 22 minutes. Cristian Romero was booked for a studs-up challenge on Jude Bellingham on 37 minutes, and Kang-in Lee could have been sent off for a strong tackle just before the interval yet escaped. He was involved in Atlético’s second.
The match tipped after the restart when Huijsen conceded a penalty in his own box on 49 minutes and was sent off. Vinicius endured a quiet night, firing two efforts off target and offering little cover for Marc Cucurella, and was replaced on 54 minutes by Yan Diomandé.
Thibaut Courtois limited the damage, producing a superb save from a Cristian Romero header on 67 minutes, and he could do nothing about either Atlético goal. Later, Romero headed straight to Diomandé, who was close to scoring on 77 minutes.
