Legia Warsaw added depth to their goalkeeping options on Sunday, with the signing of Austrian goalkeeper Richard Strebinger from Rapid Vienna.
With Artur Boruc still to serve two of his three-game ban for striking an opponent, and confidence in back-up Cezary Miszta low, the club have opted to swoop for the 29-year-old as they attempt to avoid dropping from the Ekstraklasa.
With Boruc expected to call-time on his playing career at the end of the current season, Legia are looking for a succession plan. An initial six-month deal, with the option to extend for a further year, allows the club flexibility should they somehow still find themselves in the relegation zone at the end of the season.
“Legia is a great team,” Strebinger told the club’s official site. “It is a great challenge for me and an honor to be in such a place. I want to be successful with the team and help them win trophies. The club showed how much it wants me to join. I am very happy about it.“
Strebinger started his senior career in Germany with Hertha Berlin’s second string, before moving onto Werder Bremen II in 2012. He eventually made two appearances in their first team. After a brief loan spell at Jahn Regensburg, the custodian returned to his homeland with Rapid, and made 158 appearances for the capital club in six-and-a-half years.
