AZ are exploring the possibility of acquiring stakes in foreign clubs, according to the Eredivisie side’s annual report (via Voetbal International).
The Alkmaar team have also stated that they are open to new (minority) shareholders, after Billy Beane’s relinquishment of assets. Beane has been advising AZ’s board since 2015 and acquired a 5% stake five years ago.
The former baseball player, who gave a seminar on the ‘Moneyball Mindset’ last month, has since sold his stake. This means that full control of the club now rests with the AZ Alkmaar Foundation. Beane will remain as an advisor.
The club is exploring the possibility of acquiring stakes in foreign clubs in combination with operational and technical support.
Such a structure is becoming increasingly common in international football, and AZ believe they cannot ignore the trend of internationalisation and multi-club ownership. The precise details of the plans are still being discussed.
