Liverpool have lost six of their last seven games across all competitions, putting manager Arne Slot under huge scrutiny.
Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title last season and was backed in last summer’s transfer window as a result, raising expectations heading into the new campaign.
After starting the season with five consecutive victories, the Reds have since endured a plunge in form.
Their performances were unconvincing early on in the campaign, making their current struggles unsurprising.
Liverpool’s woes can be attributed to the psychological effect of Diogo Jota’s death, the struggles of new signings, and Slot’s poor decision-making.
They now head into a crucial week, where they will face Aston Villa and Manchester City in the league, while also playing Real Madrid in the Champions League.
These three fixtures could prove decisive for Liverpool’s season and for Slot.
The 47-year-old still retains the backing of the Liverpool hierarchy and the majority of the fans, but that could change with poor results in the forthcoming games.
A defeat to Madrid might not have a significant impact on their Champions League campaign, but defeats to Villa and City could cost them the defence of the league title.
Villa are one of the division’s in-form teams, but have not won at Anfield since 2014, and City are heavily reliant on Haaland, making these two games winnable.
Slot must find his strongest starting XI, fix his side’s defensive frailties and hope the attack becomes more clinical to come out unscathed in these games.
While he may not be sacked immediately, poor results in these fixtures could culminate in his eventual dismissal.
