Yesterday it was reported that Coventry were set to complete the signing of young Belgian striker Norman Bassette. The striker was the number one target for KV Mechelen this summer, but in the end they were unable to strike a deal. 19-year-old Bassette has signed a contract with the English side until 2028. He leaves SM Caen having scored once in 15 appearances.
Last season he spent the year with Mechelen on loan, and clearly impressed the side who wanted him back on a more permanent basis. The striker scored five goals in 23 games and was seen as the top priority for the club this summer. With striker Lion Lauberbach set for some time on the sidelines, Mechelen are incredibly thin up front. With little money to play with as well, how they can fix this problem remains to be seen. Fans will also wonder if the club spent too long pursuing a deal for Bassette and have ultimately missed out on other potential targets.
