How did Aitana Bonmati suffer her injury?

The incident happened during a training session ahead of Tuesday’s Nations League decider.

Aitana Bonmati fell awkwardly and finished the training session in pain, with tests revealing that she has suffered a broken leg.

The Spanish Football Federation said in a statement: “Aitana Bonmatí finished the morning session at the Ciudad del Futbol in Las Rozas in pain after a bad landing in an accidental action.

“Following tests carried out by the medical services of the Royal Spanish Football Federation on Sunday, November 30, she has been diagnosed with a fracture in her left fibula. The player will return to Barcelona and rejoin her club to begin her recovery period.”

Bonmati played in the first leg of the Nations League final against Germany on Friday, which ended goalless.

Spain will have to cope without Bonmati when they look to defend the trophy they first won last year, when the two nations meet in the return game at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

How long will Aitana Bonmati be out of action?

Catalan media have suggested that the 27-year-old would be out for at least two months to recover from the injury.

However, they add that this could rise to three of four months if she needs to undergo surgery.

How Bonmati’s injury will affect Barcelona

Barcelona will lose their best player after already losing key player Patricia Guijarro to a fractured foot.

The club will hope to have her back and in full fitness to play in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals which begin on March 24th, 2026.

Barcelona are sitting comfortably in both their domestic league and in the Women’s Champions League.

The Catalan club are six points clear at the top of Liga F. Bonmati last week called for changes to Liga F, after she compared it negatively to the Women’s Super League.

Barcelona also sit top of the League Phase of the Women’s Champions League and are expected to qualify for the quarter-finals, with their final two games coming against Benfica and Paris FC.

While the Spanish club will be expected to continue their dominance in Spain, Barcelona will hope to avoid any surprises in the Champions League due to the absences of Bonmati and Guijarro.

Bonmati will also hope to be back in time for World Cup qualifying, which starts on April 14th when Spain face England. The World Cup qualifying draw has also pitted Spain against Iceland and Ukraine.
