Hector Fort was the standout surprise in Barcelona’s starting lineup against Rayo Vallecano in the La Liga fixture on Monday night.

The 18-year-old right-back’s chance came as Barça manager Hansi Flick had no hesitation in benching Jules Kounde after the Frenchman arrived late to a team meeting.

Hector Fort capitalises on his opportunity

It is safe to say that Hector Fort made the most of his rare opportunity against Rayo Vallecano last night at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

This match marked Fort’s third La Liga start, following his previous appearances against Deportivo Alaves and Espanyol.

The La Masia graduate put in a composed display on the right side of the backline, handling defensive duties well while also contributing effectively in attack.

Fort’s most eye-catching moment was a clever backheel pass to Lamine Yamal, though the winger was unable to convert it into a goal.

The Spanish right-back completed the match with one chance created, 25 successful passes out of 29 attempted, two recoveries, two interceptions, and 47 touches in 66 minutes before being substituted for Kounde.

It has been a difficult season thus far for Fort, with minutes having been hard to come by thanks to Kounde’s brilliant performances.

So far this season, the youngster has featured in 13 matches for Barcelona’s first team, and every time he has stepped onto the pitch, he has proven himself ready for the challenge.

Having capitalised on his chance against Rayo Vallecano, Fort will now be hoping that it translates into more minutes on the field in the weeks to come.
