Barcelona agree to sell defender to Ajax for €5m

Barcelona are poised to have a busy final few weeks of the summer transfer window, both in terms of signings and exits. A couple of days ago, they finalised Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s loan move to Ajax, and the veteran goalkeeper will not be the only player to move from the Spotify Camp Nou to the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

In recent weeks, it’s been reported that Ajax have shown interest in Jofre Torrents. The 19-year-old is a candidate to leave Barcelona this summer due to him not being part of Hansi Flick’s plans for the 2026-27 season, and while a loan move had been the preference for the Catalan club, they are now set to lose him permanently.

As per MD, Barcelona and Ajax are in the final stages of agreeing a transfer for Torrents to the Amsterdam club. A loan had originally been discussed, but now, it’s been decided that the left-back will move permanently to the Eredivisie giants.

Barcelona will retain key clauses as part of Ajax deal

According to the report, Ajax will pay up to €5m for Torrents’ services, while Barcelona will retain a 50% sell-on clause and a future buy-back option. This will allow the Catalans to retain control over his future, and if he impresses in the Netherlands, there is a good chance that he is re-signed in the future.

It is smart for Barcelona to sell Torrents using this method. Bringing in €5m for a player that does not count now is good business, especially as they will have the option to re-sign him in the coming years if he develops as planned at Ajax. At that point, the Catalans should have solved their financial woes, thus making an operation easier to achieve, but for now, the money raised can be put towards crucial business.
