Barcelona have completed the signing of Anthony Gordon on a five-year deal to 2031, worth 70 million plus 10 in performance-related add-ons. The official announcement followed a drawn-out day of paperwork.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the forward and his camp were called for a 13:00 signing with acting president Rafa Yuste, but completion arrived after 20:00 as fiscal fine print was reworked between Newcastle and Barcelona.
Gordon spent the day at his hotel until told to head to the club offices. The club suggested he return to the UK after the photos, yet he chose to address the media. He had hoped to speak at Camp Nou, but construction ruled it out.
Speaking in English with a Liverpool lilt, plus beginner Spanish he vowed to sharpen, he said he felt immense pride. Joining the club of his childhood dreams left him with no doubts. He is Deco’s first signing of the summer.
Gordon said he had spoken with Hansi Flick in recent days and that his excitement had grown. He hopes they can win many titles together. He previously idolised José Mourinho and has faced accusations of inconsistency at Newcastle.
Talks over Bernardo Silva are moving quickly. The 31-year-old could join as a free agent after leaving Manchester City, wants to link up with Flick and has family in Catalonia. Barcelona’s relationship with agent Jorge Mendes is relevant, midfield options are crowded, Flick must approve, and progress on Julián Álvarez is proving more complicated.
