Ronald Araujo was by far the most talked-about player at Barcelona in the wake of their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this week.

In what could have been a fighting performance from Barcelona in the second half, the club’s captain, Araujo, made sure that Barça never got the chance to fight back into the game by getting sent off late in the first half.

His dismissal meant Barcelona had to play with ten men for a little more than half the game, thus giving Chelsea an excellent opportunity to dominate and secure a rather comfortable 3-0 victory.

Needless to say, Araujo has received intense criticism, even from Barcelona supporters, in the wake of his mistake against Chelsea.

Fans are starting to point out the consistency of Araujo’s mistakes, especially in big Champions League matches, with some wanting him gone from the team.

Araujo affected by the criticism

According to Catalunya Radio (h/t FCB World), the slew of criticism that followed after the Chelsea defeat has personally affected Araujo.

The Uruguayan international has not been able to comprehend the scope of the problem. He now feels that carrying the captain’s armband comes with even more burden.

However, the report adds that Araujo is not shying away from the challenge or even relinquishing the armband.

In fact, the centre-back feels he needs to give back to Barcelona and make up for his mistake by producing stellar performances during the remainder of the campaign.

But after that silly error, it remains to be seen whether Araujo gets support from Hansi Flick, who was clearly frustrated with the defender and even more frustrated with himself.

The coming weeks, therefore, could prove to be critical for Araujo as he looks to move on and prove to Barcelona fans that he is capable of leading the team.
