In the last few months, there has been a lot of speculation about the futures of some of the players who were previously considered key for FC Barcelona.
This has been particularly the case with two players, Frenkie de Jong, and Ronald Araujo, as the contracts of both these players were ending in 2026 and the Catalans were clear that either they will renew or they would be put on the market.
Speculation about the departure of the Uruguayan defender reached its climax a few weeks ago, as Juventus were linked with him and were looking to get him on a loan with a purchase option. However, in a meeting with the player, Deco convinced him to stay after the injury suffered by Iñigo Martínez in the game against Real Madrid.
Now, Mundo Deportivo claims that another development has taken place that will eliminate any doubts about his continuity at Barcelona. The Spanish publication reports that the Uruguayan has signed his new contract with the Blaugrana side today, on Thursday, which will remain in force till the summer of 2031.
The center-back signed this new contract in President Joan Laporta’s office, where he was accompanied by his agents and family. This meeting was also attended by other high-profile Barcelona officials, including Rafa Yuste, Joan Soler, and Deco. This new contract will be announced by the Catalans in the coming few hours
However, the report also mentions that his long-term continuity at Barcelona is still not without doubts as he will make a decision in his regard after the second half of the season. In his meeting with Deco a few weeks ago, the two parties agreed to keep open the option of an exit in the summer if he had doubts about his future at Barcelona.
For now, he is back in the starting lineup as Iñigo Martínez is out with an injury, but his status in the team remains to be seen after the Spaniard’s return.
