The city of Barcelona is in election mode today as Joan Laporta and Victor Font lock horns to become the next president of Barça.
However, in a bizarre moment, Barcelona’s captain, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is currently on loan at Girona, was not able to exercise his right to vote.
Although the German was present at the polling station, even going to the voting counter to vote, he was unable to do so.
Ter Stegen, a club member since joining in the summer of 2014, spent time with his advisors reviewing documentation in an effort to resolve the issue on the spot.
Despite their best attempts, the problem could not be fixed, leaving the captain unable to exercise his right as a socio. This was evident in a video widely circulated by Catalunya Radio.
According to Diario SPORT, ter Stegen was not eligible to vote as he was not present during the census of the club’s socios.
Currently on loan at Girona until June 30 while recovering from injury, ter Stegen’s membership details had apparently not been updated in the club’s electoral roll.
The universal census for today’s vote includes 114,504 eligible members, who can cast ballots at five polling stations across Catalonia and Andorra between 9:00 and 21:00.
Shortly after leaving the polling booth, Ter Stegen caught up with Gerard Romero, who asked him about his latest injury at Girona.
In response, the German admitted it was disappointing to pick up an injury at an opportune time, but he is looking to move on.
“I see my teammates day to day and they look good. I wasn’t expecting this latest injury, but we have to accept it,” he said.
