Barcelona have confirmed Javier Mascherano will be leaving the club after seven and a half seasons.

The Argentine will be receiving an institutional farewell from his team-mates and president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Wednesday at 11:00 CET ahead of what seems likely to be a move to Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune.

Mascherano joined the Blaugrana from Liverpool in the summer of 2010 and made 334 appearances for the club, winning 18 trophies along the way.

The 33-year-old moved to Camp Nou as a midfielder but spent much of his time in Catalunya playing in central defence, a role in which he starred in the famous Champions League final victory over Manchester United at Wembley.

But the former West Ham United man only ever managed one goal for the club – a penalty in a 7-1 victory over Osasuna last season.

Lionel Messi, Philip Cocu and Dani Alves are the only three non-Spanish players to have made more appearances for Barcelona than Mascherano.

His farewell will be broadcast live on the club’s official website and he will say goodbye to Camp Nou when Ernesto Valverde’s side take on local rivals Espanyol in the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening.
