Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Rodrigo Hernández Cascante on a deal to 2030. The club said in a statement that agreement with Manchester City was made official on Tuesday.
The Spain captain and MVP of the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada joins after rejecting Real Madrid’s proposal. He signs for four seasons, for €60 million plus €16 million in add-ons, with 10 linked to tougher appearance targets and six to easier ones.
Barça’s initial €50 million offer and City’s €80 million stance led to a third bid accepted by all. Rodri had one year left on his contract and wanted to leave the English club.
Frenkie de Jong’s injury, set to sideline him for months, prompted Hansi Flick to seek an experienced holding midfielder. Sporting director Deco met Rodri for around three hours, then Flick called to outline his role, while Spain team-mates, including Lamine Yamal, urged the move.
Barça’s style and the presence of many Spain internationals weighed on his decision. On arrival he spoke of wanting to win the Champions League with Barça and called the move a dream.
His standout traits include tactical intelligence, ball-winning, calm on the ball and precise passing, plus leadership and consistency. His career spans Atlético and Villarreal to City in 2019, where he became key under Pep Guardiola and scored the winner in the 2023 Champions League final.
With Spain he won Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, and was recognised with Ballon d’Or at both events.
