For many young players coming through the ranks of Barcelona, the dream is to step onto the pitch wearing the first team shirt.
For academy talent Xavi Espart, that dream became reality during Barcelona’s Champions League clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The young defender was introduced late in the match as manager Hansi Flick looked to close out a difficult night in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg.
Barcelona had fought back to earn a 1-1 draw, and in the closing moments, Flick decided to hand the youngster his long-awaited opportunity.
Espart entered the match in the 88th minute, marking the beginning of what could be a promising journey with Barcelona’s senior team.
After the game, the teenager spoke to the media and admitted that the moment still felt unreal.
“It’s a dream, I’m still taking it in,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
The young player then described the unexpected moment when he realised he would be stepping onto the pitch.
“Flick had called Roony Bardghji. They scored the goal, and Ronald threw himself to the ground. Flick made us wait and then suddenly turned around and shouted: Xavi,” he said.
The sudden call-up caught the youngster by surprise, but he reacted instantly, rushing to prepare for the moment he had been waiting for his entire life.

“I rushed off to get my kit and get ready to come on. I couldn’t believe it. Once I was out on the pitch, I had the time of my life,” he said.
Espart also revealed the message Flick gave him before sending him onto the pitch, which helped calm his nerves.
“Flick told me to play as I know how and that I would enjoy it,” he revealed.
After the match, his fellow academy graduate Pau Cubarsi also praised the youngster’s contribution.
The two players have spent years developing together within Barcelona’s youth system, sharing many matches and experiences along the way.
“We’ve shared many moments with Xavi. He feels comfortable when he comes on. He made a good defensive play that could have cost us a goal. He was excellent,” said the defender.
Meanwhile, as for Espart, having familiar teammates around him in the first team has made the transition easier.
“Having these teammates helps a lot, they are my friends. Coming on here is not easy. They give me confidence.
“I have always wanted to play for Barça and always will. It’s my goal. Step by step and giving my all,” Espart concluded.
