It is clear to see that FC Barcelona are prioritising the continuity of their key players. The youngsters, for instance, were renewed without hesitation in order to safeguard the club’s best interests and ensure the continuity of their best talents.
However, other cases are not as crystal clear and would require a bit more time before a final decision is made. One such case is that of 29-year-old defender Andreas Christensen, and his immediate future at the club beyond this season.
Despite the fact that the player’s contract ends in 2026, SPORT reports that he would like to renew his deal and extend his stay at Barça. However, a crucial aspect in terms of whether or not that ends up happening is the perspective of the club itself as well.
Unlike the Danish player’s reported intention, Barça are trying to be a bit more methodical about this, it seems. For the Catalan giants, there are two ways to look at the possibility of Christensen’s future at the club, and both offer a slightly different story.

From a strictly sporting perspective, there is no doubt that the €12 million-rated Danish defender offers a lot of quality and experience. Moreover, Hansi Flick and his coaching staff continue to trust him despite his recurring physical issues.
However, the club wishes to overlook and assess his performances over the course of this season and also potentially look at the financial side of things.
Ultimately, even if they do decide to renew his contract, the report claims that it would likely see a reduced salary being offered, given that Christensen is already a high earner due to his arrival as a free transfer.
However, the report also claims that the player would be willing to make certain sacrifices to extend his stay as well. Even though he likely would not lack offers in the summer, it will be interesting to see what ends up happening.
