FC Barcelona’s pursuit of Jorge Salinas has entered a decisive countdown, with the release-clause dispute still blocking an agreement with Racing Santander.

The Catalan club want the 19-year-old defender, who impressed for Racing while mainly playing at left-back, despite also being viewed as a centre-back.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona believe Salinas can still be signed for €8 million until 30 June. Racing, however, argue that his clause already rose to €16 million once promotion to La Liga was secured.

That disagreement is now the heart of the operation. Barca see 1 July as the date when the higher clause applies, while Racing believe the promotion changed the price immediately.

Barca should avoid bidding war

Barcelona’s position appears clear: they are willing to discuss a deal around €8 million, but not enter an auction at €16 million.

That is sensible. Salinas is a very interesting talent, left-footed, versatile, and already tested in senior football, but Barca cannot afford to overpay for potential when squad planning is already tight.

The club have reportedly offered youth players as part of the operation and even considered the option of loaning Salinas back for a season. That shows creativity, but also restraint.

Racing accept that the player may leave and believe there are clubs prepared to pay the higher amount. With Jorge Mendes handling the player’s affairs, the situation remains active.

For Barcelona, the key is discipline. Salinas fits the project, especially as a young Spanish defender with room to grow under Hansi Flick. But the value of the deal is part of the appeal.

If Racing stand firm at €16 million, Barca should be ready to walk away. If the €8 million path opens before 30 June, it becomes a much more attractive opportunity.
