Barcelona have already begun their search to find the next Ronald Araujo – report | OneFootball

Barcelona agreed to a shock deal to send Ronald Araujo out on loan to Liverpool for the entirety of the 2026-27 campaign.

The Merseyside club are set to cover 100% of his wages and also have the option to purchase him permanently for around €55 million.

His departure from the club may have been a necessary separation after all that has happened in recent years, but he remains the club’s biggest success story in recruitment alongside Pedri.

According to SPORT, Araujo’s journey from Boston River to Barcelona remains one of the club’s smartest pieces of business in recent times.

Signed in 2018 for an initial €1.7 million, the Uruguayan eventually became a first-team regular and captain, making the deal a model for Barcelona’s scouting department.

Barça’s South American strategy is clear

Under scouting chief Joao Amaral, Barcelona are actively searching for the next hidden gem rather than competing for already established stars.

The objective is to identify elite talent before Europe’s biggest clubs arrive, targeting players who can be signed for less than €3 million before completing their development with Barça Atletic.

It is a strategy designed to reduce financial risk while preserving the club’s ability to uncover future first-team players.

Barcelona’s latest recruitment reflects that philosophy, especially over the last 12 months.

Uruguayan full-back Patricio Pacifico remains with Barça Atletic after extending his loan despite a long-term knee injury.

Ecuadorian left-back Josue Caicedo has now joined the club from LDU Quito on loan with a purchase option.

Both are long-term investments with first-team potential.

Barcelona looking for more such talents

The report highlights 16-year-old Palmeiras forward Eduardo Conceicao as one of the region’s standout prospects, but the club have not made a concrete move for him yet.

While Barça are interested in competing for such talents, they are also very clear that they will do it only when the financial conditions are right.

However, Araujo’s success story must be considered with an asterisk. The chances of such an investment paying off are quite minimal.

With the Uruguayan, it worked wonders until a point, after which it completely stopped working. Despite that, Barça are bound to make a profit whenever they eventually move him on.

Pacifico and Caicedo are bets for the future, but there is no guarantee that their development will see them ready for the first team in due course.

That said, it is refreshing to see Barça’s scouting department keen to remain ahead of the curve. Hopefully, more talents like Araujo emerge through this pipeline.
