FC Barcelona have endured a slump in recent weeks. Persistent injuries have meant that Hansi Flick has not had the opportunity to field all his first-choice players in the same XI.
Players such as Raphinha have been missing from action for quite some time, and recent injuries to the likes of Pedri, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo and Gavi have reiterated the need for depth in midfield.
Now, according to Fichajes, Barcelona have entered the race to sign former Manchester United flop Scott McTominay. The midfielder is currently plying his trade for Napoli.
McTominay has turned his career around since his move to Italy. He was the star of the team in their run to the Serie A title last season, and he has continued his exploits in 2025/26.
Currently 28 years old, the Scottish international is in the prime years of his career. His upturn in form has prompted the Catalan club to express interest in bringing him to Spain.
However, things are not as straightforward as they look. Napoli, for one, consider McTominay not for sale. The threat of Saudi clubs also looms, should the player become available.
Having suffered from an identity crisis during his Manchester United days, the 28-year-old has developed into a proper box-to-box midfielder. In many ways, he is similar to Fermin Lopez.
However, Barcelona would be looking at a more all-round role for the Napoli midfielder, albeit with less game time. At this stage of his career, McTominay might not want that.
This is not a move that is likely to happen. Let us wait and see how things play out.
