FC Barcelona remain determined to sign a left winger during this transfer window. Their first choice for several months had been Luis Diaz, currently at Liverpool.

However, the recent offer of Nico Williams through his agent led the club to shift its focus toward the Athletic Club forward.

Being six years younger, Nico represents a more future-oriented investment, both in terms of potential resale value and the ease of acquisition – his release clause means no negotiation with Athletic is necessary, only payment of the buyout amount.

However, as reported a while ago negotiations with Nico have stalled in recent days. The impasse is due to the player’s agent demanding registration guarantees to be explicitly included in the contract.

This has caused friction, despite a verbal agreement reached last week regarding the length of the contract and salary terms. It represents a shift in tone that has complicated progress.

Luis Diaz still in the picture

In this context, Barcelona continue to keep their interest in Luis Diaz alive, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Colombian was Deco’s original top target to strengthen the left wing. While Diaz is older than Nico, he is also more versatile, capable of playing as a centre-forward, and has greater experience at the highest level of competition.

The main issue is that Liverpool has shown no willingness to open negotiations with Barcelona. Moreover, Diaz’s agent has not been able to exert enough pressure to convince the English club to enter talks.

Barcelona, for their part, are well aware of the player’s interest in wearing the Blaugrana shirt and have been tracking him closely.

Deco has never completely abandoned the option of signing Diaz. As a seasoned sporting director, he knows that until a deal is signed and a release clause is paid, no transfer can be considered done.

Hence, while Nico remains the priority, Barcelona are not discarding the possibility of turning back to Diaz if the current negotiations continue to stall.

However, reports suggest that despite what is being said about Nico’s concerns regarding registration, his camp is relaxed about the situation and the transfer remains on track.
