As the weeks go on, it is looking more and more unlikely that Barcelona will sign Julian Alvarez. Atletico Madrid continue to insist that they will not sell to a direct rival, which has led to the Catalans starting to consider alternatives – although their priority is still to close a deal for the Argentine striker.
In recent weeks, Barcelona have been linked with several names. Lautaro Martinez is one option being considered, and sporting director Deco has already held talks with his representatives ahead of a possible move being made if/when the Alvarez pursuit comes to an end. However, he’s not the only one under consideration.
According to Jijantes FC (via Sport), Barcelona have sounded out the possibility of signing Georges Mikautadze. Contacts have already taken place with the Villarreal striker’s representatives, and according to reports from Georgia, he has already given the go-ahead for the reigning La Liga champions to make a move for his services.
Barcelona are prepared to spend in the region of €120m on Alvarez, while it may take €100m+ for Martinez to leave Inter if they decide to go for him. But in the case of Mikautadze, he would be much more affordable, with Villarreal reportedly prepared to accept offers in the region of €60-65m for their star striker.
Mikautadze had a very impressive first season in La Liga last season following his 2025 move from Lyon. He racked up 13 goals and six assists in 32 league appearances (23 starts) for Villarreal, so it is no surprise that he has caught the attention of Barcelona. If they fail to convince Atleti to negotiate for Alvarez, the best course of action may be to go for the Georgia international – he may not be as established, but he could be a very good fit for Hansi Flick’s system.
