Inigo Martinez has played 16 official matches for FC Barcelona this season and has been one of the team’s most solid and consistent performers under Hansi Flick.
The veteran’s current contract expires at the end of the season but if he plays in around 20 more matches, he will secure his automatic renewal for another year until the 2025/26 season.
It is because the centre-back has a clause in his contract which stipulates that he must play 60 per cent of Barcelona’s official matches this season to extend his contract for another year.
However, according to SPORT, Barcelona intend to renew Martinez’s contract beyond what this clause stipulates.
The Blaugrana are delighted with the veteran defender, and the player is also enjoying this season under Hansi Flick’s management. The German considers securing his continuity for another season a priority.

Therefore, Martinez’s renewal until June 2026 will become a reality. Now it is just a matter of timing, as there are more urgent matters such as finalising the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor from 1 January.
Martinez’s partnership with Pau Cubarsi has been one of the key reasons behind Barça’s strong start to the season.
The veteran’s role is crucial on the pitch and in the dressing room as he pays close attention to all the young players and engages with them. The younger players see the centre-back as a role model and an example to follow for a successful professional career.
The defender’s qualities have impressed Flick and the sporting staff, led by Deco, who want to ensure his renewal for another season.
In fact, Deco even met with the former Athletic Club star’s agent recently to express the club’s happiness with his performances.
Martinez has more than earned his extension, and Barcelona do not want to let him go.
