Speaking on Moeve Futbol Zone (h/t SPORT), former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique openly discussed the current situation of the Blaugrana team, the style of play and defensive risks taken under Hansi Flick.

Flick’s team has attracted criticism for their high-risk defensive line, with some pundits stating that the Catalans would find it hard to win the UEFA Champions League.

Pique, however, believes that Barcelona are strong contenders for all trophies this season and that their style of play gives fans a lot of entertainment.

“I think there has been much more noise than what is actually happening on the pitch. They are in line with what we saw last year,” said Pique.

“A very offensive team, taking a lot of risks, but at the same time putting on a great show, which is ultimately what people want, scoring a lot of goals and also conceding, as is evident with Flick’s approach.”

“I think they are contenders for everything,” he added.

When asked about the Catalans’ chances in Europe, in particular, the former Barcelona captain replied:

“In Europe too? Yes, why not? It’s clear that there are some very strong teams in Europe right now, and it looks like sooner rather than later, they’ll end up winning the Champions League.

“Arsenal, for example, or PSG, who won it last year. Add to that Real Madrid and Bayern, who I think have raised their game with Kompany, so obviously it will be difficult.”

At this moment, Barça lead La Liga despite some uncertain spells at the start of the season and despite losing the Clasico against Real Madrid.

Flick’s team recovered well and now hold a four-point advantage over Los Blancos. In the Champions League, they currently sit in 18th place, which would force them into the play-off round, although they still have chances to reach the top eight.
