Real Madrid have had many greats play for their club over the years. However, there are other greats in the game who came close but never joined the Spanish club.

Among them is Robert Lewandowski, who was on the verge of joining Los Blancos many seasons before he eventually moved to Barcelona.

As quoted by SPORT, his former agent Cezary Kucharski has revealed that Lewandowski was close to changing direction shortly before his move from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich was announced in 2014.

The Polish striker even considered breaking his agreement with Bayern in order to join Real Madrid. Kucharski said:

“Yes, Robert was close to signing a contract with Real Madrid. There were two or three weeks left before his transfer to Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund was announced. Basically, he wanted to terminate his contract with Bayern and go to Real Madrid. The conditions there were 20% better.”

That is a striking detail, especially because Lewandowski went on to become one of the defining strikers of his generation after the failed move.

Why the move did not happen

Kucharski explained that he advised Lewandowski against forcing the Madrid move because he believed Bayern offered a clearer path to stardom. He continued:

“This determined that he became the main star at Bayern and a substitute at Real Madrid. Those around him put a lot of pressure on him to leave. I thought it was important to keep my word. It is better to be number one at Bayern than number 11 or 12 at Real Madrid.”

That line says a lot about the club’s level at the time. Madrid were already packed with elite attackers, and even a player as good as Lewandowski would have had to fight for space and status.

Kucharski also confirmed that Madrid kept returning for him:

“Basically, every year Real Madrid asked me what was happening, what the situation was with Robert.”

A great transfer that never was

The most interesting moment came in 2018. Kucharski said:

“Ten days before our separation was publicly announced, I was in Madrid. It was the winter of 2018 and I was speaking with Florentino Perez’s right-hand man. He told me that if I opened the door to Bayern, they would want to make a serious offer.”

In the end, Lewandowski never wore white. He eventually reached La Liga with Barcelona, where he scored goals, won titles, and closed his Camp Nou chapter before moving towards a new stage in MLS.

For Madrid fans, this is one of those transfer stories that feels fascinating without being painful. Lewandowski was a world-class forward, but Real Madrid still built winning teams without him.

Sometimes the great signings that do not happen are simply part of the club’s history. Madrid wanted Lewandowski, and Lewandowski looked tempted, but the timing was never right.
