Ronald Araujo may only be on loan at Liverpool, but the Barcelona defender is already giving his parent club something to think about.

The Uruguay international started at right-back in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town on Friday, producing a performance that showed the qualities that have previously made him one of Europe’s most highly regarded defenders.

Araujo is not a natural right-back, and his limitations going forward were noticeable.

As observed by the Liverpool fans, he does not provide the same attacking threat as Jeremie Frimpong, for example.

Defensively, though, he offered the Reds something they have needed from the position: authority, aggression and security.

The 27-year-old regularly tucked inside rather than remaining high and wide, helping Liverpool maintain their defensive shape.

His ability to win challenges and defend one-on-one situations also gave the Reds greater solidity.

Araujo’s numbers show defensive impact

Araujo’s statistics against Ipswich demonstrate how influential he was without needing to dominate possession.

He completed 32 of 38 passes for an 84% pass accuracy rate, including 16 of 18 in his own half and 16 of 20 in the opposition half.

More importantly, the Barcelona loanee recorded seven clearances, won three of four ground duels and was perfect in the air, winning 100% of his aerial duels. He also committed no fouls.

Those numbers reflect the type of contribution Araujo can make.

He may not provide the attacking output expected from a conventional modern full-back, but his defensive instincts can compensate for that when Liverpool need greater protection.

As a result, his performance has already prompted Liverpool fans to hope he remains in the starting XI for the time being.

Liverpool move could influence Araujo’s future

For Araujo, this season carries significance beyond simply proving he can perform in a different role.

The move to Liverpool gives him an opportunity to rebuild the consistency and authority that previously made him an important figure at Barcelona.

Regular football and responsibility could be particularly valuable after a period in which his position at Camp Nou became less secure.

The biggest question will come at the end of the campaign, when Liverpool, Barcelona and the player are expected to assess what happens next.
