The goalkeeper Joan Garcia did not need a lot of time to showcase his talents to the FC Barcelona fans after having joined the Catalan club last summer, as he immediately started putting in performances similar to those that had made him one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga last season.
Unfortunately, the 24-year-old suffered a knee injury just a few weeks into the new campaign. He picked up the injury during the final play of the match against Oviedo on September 25 and underwent surgery two days later to repair a tear in the internal meniscus of his left knee.
Initial estimates suggested a recovery period of around four to six weeks, which kept open the possibility of a return for the upcoming El Clásico against Real Madrid on October 26.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, although Garcia’s recovery is progressing well, Barcelona do not plan to take any risks with him, and his participation in the Bernabéu clash has effectively been ruled out.
Within the club, the message is clear: Garcia is viewed as a key player for the entire season, not just for one marquee fixture. The medical staff and sporting management agree that he will only return when he feels fully fit and confident.
Given the nature of his knee injury, every precaution is being taken to avoid setbacks, even if that means extending his recovery closer to six weeks rather than four.
Wojciech Szczesny is expected to remain the starter in Garcia’s absence. The Polish international has expressed his support for the young Spaniard, saying he hopes for his quick recovery, but he is also preparing mentally to start in the high-stakes clash against Real Madrid.
Before the trip to the Bernabéu, Hansi Flick’s side will face Girona at Montjuïc on October 18 and Olympiacos in the Champions League on October 21.
After El Clásico, Barcelona’s schedule includes matches against Elche, Club Brugge, and Celta Vigo before the international break in mid-November. By then, six weeks will have passed since Garcia’s injury, and the goalkeeper could be ready to make his long-awaited return once fully recovered.
