Barcelona make huge Champions League statement with second half display vs Newcastle

It remains unknown what Hansi Flick said to his team during the half-time break, but the side that walked out of the tunnel for the second half was nowhere close to the team that left at the end of the first period.

The same team that was struggling for control and winning only half the duels attempted began coasting to dominance and controlling proceedings.

Chances began flowing naturally and they took them with ease, making a game that looked complicated until that point into a one-sided affair.

Barcelona’s second half against Newcastle United must be investigated, researched, and studied for the manner in which they outplayed a genuinely good team was stunning.

More than anything, it was a huge Champions League statement from one of the favourites.

The right mentality

Of the two aspects that stood out the most in Barcelona’s game play in the second half, the first was the elite mentality they showed, not for the first time this season.

Despite struggling just 15 minutes before the break, Barcelona walked out onto the field knowing full well that if they played with everything they had, there was no competition between them and their opponents.

Instead of taking the difficult opening period as a warning from Newcastle, they took it as a challenge to come out better and go one step ahead. That mentality, needless to say, makes a massive difference.

Every player in the Garnet-and-Blue last night stood out for their confidence, nonchalance, and determination to get home a big result after the break. The defence improved massively, the midfield garnered control and the attack simply went berserk.

A masterclass in attack

Enough is said in the footballing world about Barcelona’s star front-three and attacking prowess, but last night was one of the nights when they truly delivered a statement.

The second massive positive from Barcelona’s second-half last night was how the forward department ensured recurrent cascades of attacks on the opponents mercilessly, and how they were hyper-efficient in front of goal.

At no point in the game did the Catalans take their foot off the gas, not even after scoring seven goals.

That ruthlessness is something that has been lacking in the team for a long time, and it is a sign to the world that Barcelona are out looking for blood.

Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski wreaked havoc in the visitors’ box alongside Fermin Lopez, and they could well have finished the game with ten or more goals scored.

Despite missing a few chances, they converted five goals after the break, including three in nine minutes, and it is clear that teams across Europe should fear Barcelona’s attack at this point.

Conclusion

Barcelona still have their flaws, but it is clear that Hansi Flick is well aware of them and is working on them with every passing game.

As much as was said about the team’s defensive issues and struggles in converting chances, the team have shown massive improvements on both fronts in recent games.

With every passing game, they thus grow into a stronger, more cohesive, and well-rounded unit. They still have not peaked, and the time for that is now.

Last night’s second-half serves as a statement performance to all the remaining teams in the UCL that Barcelona are legitimate contenders to take home the title.

Their attack must be feared. They must be feared. And the team is not one for the future, it is one for today.
