Barcelona not looking to sign a new fullback this summer

Article image:Barcelona not looking to sign a new fullback this summer

FC Barcelona have only one match left to play in this 2024-25 season, i.e. the La Liga match against Athletic Club. However, the Blaugranes have already wrapped up the league title, and the result of this game is not going to impact them much.

As a result, the Catalans can now focus fully on preparing for the next season and the upcoming summer transfer window. For this transfer window, the general idea of the club is to make only the minimum of changes in their squad by retaining most of their important players and incorporating a few new players, as they want to continue betting on La Masia talent.

Barcelona not looking for new fullbacks

The fullback positions have been one of the weaker areas of the team, as they did not have a lot of depth, and in recent months, Barcelona were reported to be looking to make some signings for this area. Flick himself was reported to have highlighted this area as one that needed reinforcement when he joined the Catalan team.

However, according to SPORT, the German coach is now convinced by the performances of players already available to him for the fullback positions, and thus, the Blaugranes would not be looking to sign any new fullbacks this summer.

Flick satisfied by his available options

On the left flank, Alejandro Balde remained the main starter for most of the season, while Gerard Martin deputized for him whenever he was unavailable or needed rest.

On the right flank, Jules Kounde has been the absolute starter for Flick, but this was an area for which Barcelona had been linked with some high-profile names. One such name was Jeremie Frimpong, who had a relatively affordable release clause of €37 million, but Liverpool’s interest in him made his signing complicated.

Other options have not really convinced Flick, who believes the right-back position is well covered with Jules Kounde, Hector Fort, and Eric Garcia.

Barcelona can still decide to sign a fullback if a market opportunity arises, but this has not been the case so far. Thus, Deco and Flick agree that the players available have played at a very good level, and thus, this upcoming summer transfer window is expected to be one of the quietest in recent club history.
