In a significant development, BILD (h/t SPORT) reports that FC Barcelona have made their initial moves to extend the contract of manager Hansi Flick.

Indeed, the La Liga champions have offered the German tactician a contract extension of at least one additional season, which would tie him to the club until June 2028.

Strategic move from Barcelona

The aim of the Barcelona sporting department is to protect and stabilise the project in which all parties feel comfortable, with Flick at the helm of affairs.

Barça’s board and sporting director Deco do not want Flick to begin next season with only one year left on his contract, and negotiations have already started to secure his continuity.

The plan is to extend his deal by just one year, as the German coach is not keen on long-term contracts.

Flick has been one of Joan Laporta’s biggest sporting successes. The Barça president took a gamble on the German, who has revitalised the team despite minimal investment in signings over recent years.

Flick has improved on Xavi Hernandez’s results, won important trophies and put Barça back on the European stage while giving opportunities to young players.

Despite some internal tensions, Flick is happy in Barcelona and is hopeful that next summer the club can take another step forward with the arrival of a truly decisive signing.

Deco, meanwhile, prefers to work ahead of time and avoid situations where key figures operate with only one year left on their deals. In fact, he has already secured most of the squad, and Flick could be the next to be locked in.

Laporta’s meeting with Zahavi

According to the report, the recent meeting in Barcelona between Laporta and Pini Zahavi, Flick’s agent, was aimed at paving the way for this new contract.

The club’s intention is to secure the German’s renewal before the presidential elections, as they see him as a figure of consensus who stands above any individual candidacy.

The 60-year-old tactician already renewed last May for just one season, and a similar short extension could be agreed upon early next year.

The German coach has always made it clear that he is not a fan of long contracts and has even hinted that Barça could be his final job on the bench.

Although he has looked worn down at times this season, he still feels strong enough to continue and enjoys full backing from both the dressing room and the board.

At Barça, there is no doubt that Flick should remain in the medium term. Now it remains to be seen whether he agrees to what could be his final renewal with the club, extending his stay until 2028.
