Barcelona prepare to process Christensen’s long-term injury, eye January signing

The defender Andreas Christensen has been one of the FC Barcelona players with the most uncertain future at the Blaugrana club. Despite this, given the relative shortage of available players in the backline, he could have been a key member of the squad.

However, his recent knee injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined for up to four months, will prevent him from contributing during a crucial part of the season. With Ronald Araujo also unavailable and limited depth on the flanks, any further absences in defense could pose a significant challenge for Hansi Flick.

In such a context, SPORT reports that Barcelona are preparing to formalize Christensen’s long-term absence. By doing so, the club could free up a significant portion of his salary, creating the possibility of bringing in a quality defender during the January transfer window.

The priority will be a versatile player capable of covering multiple positions, ideally someone who can operate as a center-back or full-back, with a left-footed profile preferred.

Flick has already had to adapt, deploying Eric Garcia in multiple positions and placing Gerard Martin as a left-sided center-back. Any further setbacks could leave the team exposed in defense, making the search for reinforcements a top priority.

The sporting department is carefully weighing options, with both Deco and Flick taking time to reflect on potential signings. Only players who meet the required quality standards to compete for a starting role at Barça will be considered, and initial inquiries into suitable profiles have already been made.

Barcelona remain alert to opportunities as the market progresses, aiming to secure a defender who can provide stability during the decisive months of the season.
